Snooze

During my morning walk, I stumbled upon a simple yet touching scene—an elderly man sound asleep on a reclining chair, right outside a closed shophouse. He was completely at ease, stretched out with a cushion behind his head and a towel across his lap. Just like that, amidst the quiet stir of a waking city, he found his peace.

There was something oddly comforting about the whole setup—the classic tiled floor, the yellow chairs stacked in the corner, and the metal shutter that served as his backdrop. It felt like a slice of old-school Malaysia, where people made do with what they had, found rest wherever they could, and lived with a certain quiet dignity.

I couldn’t help but smile and feel a little envious. I’ve always found it hard to sleep once the sun is up. Something about the brightness gives me a headache. But this uncle—he looked like he had mastered the art of napping, no matter the time or place.

Maybe one day, when I retire, I’ll be able to enjoy life this way too. Not in a rush, not in a panic—just resting in the breeze, listening to the quiet hum of the streets, and letting the world go by.
