Hiding

I’ve been capturing street photos for about two decades now. It’s been a rollercoaster ride, with some close calls where I almost got into a confrontation with the subjects. But in all cases, I delete the photo as a sign of respect.

The best way to shoot photography, in my opinion, is to create that interaction with the subjects. But I don’t do that often, especially when I’m shooting solo. I should start doing it again, because that’s the best way to capture portraits.

But here’s the catch: in order to capture the moment, this can be counterproductive. Interacting is fun, and you get to meet new people, but the “moment” is lost because it becomes a staged photo.

The photo I shared in this post was taken in Behrang. I rode there on a lovely Sunday morning to take some photos around the charming town. As I was walking around with my M10 monochrome camera, armed with my 24mm Summilux lens, I spotted this scene where an old uncle was hiding behind the shutter of a shop. I quickly took a shot.

Of course, with the difference in exposure between the inside and outside, it was tough to get a good exposure of the face. But with technology, I was able to raise the exposure of the face, which made it look a bit weird and too contrasty. But since it’s a small photo, I think it’s still usable.
