Kawagoe Kumano Shrine, affectionately known as “Okumansama,” is a historic Shinto shrine located in Kawagoe City, Saitama Prefecture, Japan. Established in 1590, it was founded by enshrining deities from the Kumano region of Kii Province (modern-day Wakayama Prefecture). Originally part of Renkeiji Temple, the shrine became independent in 1868 following the separation of Buddhism and Shintoism.
This is the entrance to Kumano Shrine. If you can read Japanese, the writing on the stone says it all.
This is the entrance torii gate to the Kumano Shrine. The white lanterns with a black, three-legged crow (Yatagarasu) symbolize the shrine’s connection to Kumano beliefs.
