This is Day 5 of my jobless trip to Japan. I have been bumming around for 1 week and the withdrawal syndrome is really catching up on me. The typical me will be trying to check on my email every 2.5 seconds or so, but given that I have quit from my current job, I don’t really have an email to check. In reality, I do have my previous work email but as I am on a long leave before my last official day, I should not be checking on my email as I do not want to do any work outside of my jurisdiction 🙂
Today – is about taking it easy. Rather than going round and round, today is about chilling, finding local food and wasting time. In fact – I think I only got out of the hotel about 10+ (excluding my usual morning walk). The objective today is head to the market and makan!
Markets in Malaysia(perhaps around the world too) start operating very early. I suspect it starts about 4 to 5 in the morning. It’s pretty early. One of these days, I should get my butt out and visit this market. One of my concern is safety. We’ve been hearing stories about mugging and robberies in KL, thus going alone very early during the day probably not the best idea. But we shall see!
Anyway – the picture in this post shows a person that is visibly tired. The time is probably about 9am, and the guy would have been working for more than 4 hours. Working in the market is hard labor. Despite having a lot of foreign workers, the owner definitely would need to put in the hours. I cannot imagine the days when one does not have any extra pair of hands to help him.
Chicken is the most popular protein in the typical Malaysian diet. Almost every Malaysian will consume chicken at least once every week. I myself – would prefer chicken over beef due to its cost and health benefits.
There are generally two ways to buy chicken:
Supermarket – where the chickens are from large suppliers such as Ayamas and Ayam A1. Chicken are bred and processed centrally.
Market or pasar – where the chickens are slaughtered in the market and sold later part of the day.
There are also instances where the chickens in the market are supplied by corporations. Chicken in Malaysia generally are halal. I have been to many markets(pasar) in Malaysia and have not seen non-halal chicken.
The following photos are taken during my recent visit to Pasar Chow Kit. As mentioned in the earlier post, my visit was not planned. When I was young, my mum will bring me to this market almost on a weekly basis. I was not a fan of the market as it was dirty back then. The floor is wet and filled with holes. I don’t remember having to come back with clean feet as I would stepped into the holes and get my feet dirty.
The market itself is divided into many sections. On Saturday I went to the wet section. Reason being is that I parked my car in Kampung Baru and walked over to the market. The nearest entrance was the wet section.
The following photos are from the market itself. I can safely say that most of the workers there are friendly. There has not been any instance where the workers would hide or act negatively towards me. In fact they will invite me to come inside and take photos. As it was pretty early and I was still sleepy, I spent very little time here. I would love to come back again to shoot here.
The photo below shows the worker preparing the chicken for sale. The chicken that has been slaughtered will be cleaned here. I did not catch how they process the chicken from the point of slaughter to clean up. I have seen it before in Pudu Market though/
Yesterday I woke up pretty early for a Saturday morning. I was not planning to ride on Saturday this week, therefore I decided to drive out to go for a quick street shoot. Initially I wanted to go to Pasar Sentul, but I took the wrong turning, I ended up going to Pasar Chow Kit instead.
As I was walking along the inner alleys of the pasar, I bumped into a small noodle factory. It has this huge machine that rolls dough into yellow noodle. I believe the factory supplies the noodle for the whole pasar.
The photo below shows the uncle showcasing his rolled dough. I am not particularly sure what’s the mix of the dough, but I can guess it’s egg, flour, water, oil and some other chemicals!
There was a problem with the machine so the uncle pushed the rolled dough back into the roller. Just comparing this to my noodle maker, the process I guess is similar 🙂
